In the spotlight: Gale Thorpe on building relationships, team culture, and his journey to international

Eric: Gale, first off, welcome again to the OWL family. We’ve heard nothing but great feedback from customers about your work so far, and I know the teams in Asia and the US love working with you.
Let’s start with a fun one—Dave and I are huge Ohio State Buckeye fans. How did being a Buckeye influence your career?
Gale: Thanks, Eric! Honestly, being a Buckeye has been amazing. Buckeyes always stick together, and that connection has opened so many doors. It’s great to work with people who share that same pride and sense of community.
Eric: I love that. Now, you also played lacrosse at two of the best Division 1 collegiate programs, Syracuse and Ohio State. What did playing at such a high level teach you, and how have those lessons carried into your personal and professional life?
Gale: Playing lacrosse taught me a ton—discipline, resilience, and teamwork. You have those amazing moments, but also tough challenges that test your character. It really shaped how I approach things now. In logistics, just like on the field, it’s all about collaboration and trusting your team to achieve a common goal. Staying cool under pressure and tackling challenges head-on is something I bring with me every day.

Eric: When you’re not busy helping customers or collaborating with the team, how do you unwind? Any hobbies or activities that bring you joy?
Gale: I’ve recently gotten into golf—it’s a work in progress, but I love it! It’s a great way to spend time outdoors with friends and family. I’ve also always enjoyed the outdoors, especially bow hunting with my dad. Plus, I’ll jump into a pickup basketball or pickleball game whenever I can—it keeps things fun and active.
Eric: That’s awesome. When we interviewed Katie and Monica, we talked about OWL’s culture, which you know is really important to me. What’s your favorite part of working at OWL?
Gale: The culture here is truly second to none. From the interview process to meeting everyone in person, I immediately felt like OWL was more than just a company—it’s a family. There’s a genuine care for each other that goes beyond work. I also love that everyone’s voice is heard, no matter their title. It’s inspiring to be part of a team where every idea is valued.
Eric: If a university student asked you what you love most about the logistics industry, what would you tell them?
Gale: I’d tell them it’s incredibly rewarding to see the tangible impact of your work. Walking into a store and knowing you played a part in their supply chain is a great feeling. And working with counterparts overseas has been one of the most fulfilling parts of the job. It’s amazing to build those relationships and work toward shared goals across time zones.
Eric: Everyone has their way of recharging after a busy week. What’s your go-to?
Gale: I love to shut off my phone, spend time in the infrared sauna, and dive into a good book. It’s my way of disconnecting, recharging physically and mentally, and starting the week fresh.
Eric: You and I have talked a lot about your newfound desire to travel and explore this big beautiful planet. If you could visit any three places in 2025, where would you go?
Gale: Definitely Thailand—it’s been on my list for a while. Australia is another one; the wildlife and natural beauty seem incredible. And Switzerland—I don’t ski much yet, but I’d still love to see those mountains.
Eric: Gale, this has been fantastic. Thank you for sharing your journey and insights. You bring so much to the OWL family, and I know our customers and partners appreciate everything you do.
Gale: Thanks, Eric! I’m just grateful to be part of a team that values collaboration, innovation, and building strong relationships. Looking forward to what’s ahead!
