In the spotlight: Catching up with Katie Armenta and Monica Caressimo of OW Logistics’ Origin Management Service (OMS) team
Eric: Katie and Monica! Thank you both for making time for this—especially with everything you have on your plates. Let’s jump right in, shall we? Katie, I know you have a master’s degree in international studies, with a thesis on Chinese culture's impact on business relationships. That’s such an interesting focus! How did that lead you into logistics, and how has it shaped your journey at OWL?
Katie: Absolutely! My academic background was always driven by my passion for international cultures and connecting with people globally. Early on, I asked myself how I could turn that into a stable career, which led me to international studies. Once I entered the logistics industry, I found that my knowledge of global economics, intercultural communication, and leadership fit perfectly.
What’s been rewarding is applying those skills daily, especially as OWL grows its global presence. I love building meaningful relationships with colleagues and partners across borders—it’s a chance to bridge cultures while delivering real value.
Eric: Fascinating. That’s such a unique perspective to bring to the logistics world. Now, Monica, your path was a bit different. You started on the retail side before transitioning into the 3PL world. You, and so many others on the team with a similar background, are the reason why part of our tag-line is “we speak fluent customer.” What initially drew you to this industry, and how has your passion evolved over time?
Monica: My journey into logistics started at Pier 1, where I tracked international containers to our warehouses. What really clicked for me was how fascinating and dynamic the supply chain process is. Over time, I realized I had a passion for learning each customer’s unique needs and collaborating to find innovative solutions. Every customer is different, which keeps the work exciting. I love that logistics is about more than just moving goods—it’s about building strategies that make a tangible impact on someone’s business.
Eric: That’s fantastic. I think the variety and complexity of logistics are what draw so many of us in! Let’s shift gears a bit. Culture is such a vital part of who we are at OWL. What’s your favorite aspect of our company culture?
Monica: For me, it’s the sense of community. Even though we’re spread across the globe, there’s a genuine connection and mutual respect among the team. It feels like family, and that’s something I really value.
Katie: I completely agree. I’d also add how much care and support there is within the team. Whether it’s tackling a work challenge or something personal, there’s always someone ready to step up and help. That kind of environment makes you feel valued and motivated to do your best every day.
Eric: That’s really so great to hear, and a testament to what you’ve both helped to build here. So a natural follow-on is to get your advice for someone just joining OW Logistics. What would you say to them to help them succeed here?
Katie: I’d say don’t be afraid to share your ideas. OWL thrives on innovation and fresh perspectives, and every voice matters. Creativity is encouraged here, so don’t hold back—be part of shaping the solutions we offer.
Monica: Yeah, and take your time and don’t feel pressured to learn everything at once. Ask questions, lean on the team, and focus on observing and absorbing. The support here is incredible, and we’re all here to help each other succeed.
Eric: Great advice, thank you.
Eric: Let’s talk a little about our customers. What do you think they value most about working with OWL?
Monica: Our customers love how proactive we are. They know we’re always looking ahead to anticipate challenges and provide solutions before problems arise. It’s about being forward-thinking and aligning our systems to fit their processes, not the other way around.
Katie: Exactly. I’d add that our ability to create tailored solutions is a huge draw. Whether it’s custom reports or connecting them with strategic partners, we always go the extra mile to meet their specific needs. It’s about being flexible and customer-centric in everything we do.
Eric: That customer-first approach is something I’m so proud of. It’s at the heart of everything we do. OK, as we get towards the end of this conversation, let’s add in a fun one. If you could share a bottle of wine with any historical figure, who would it be?
Katie: Wyatt Earp, hands down. His life spanned such a fascinating period of change—from the Transcontinental Railroad to the first transatlantic flight. I’d love to hear his stories about those incredible advancements and his role in shaping the American West.
Monica: For me, it’s Thomas Nelson, my fourth great-grandfather who fought in the American Revolution. To trace my roots back that far and hear his firsthand accounts of such a pivotal moment in history would be amazing.
Eric: Those are both incredible choices! Alright, to finish I’ve got a few quick-fire questions for you both. Let’s keep it fun and fast!
Eric: City skyline or ocean sunset?
Katie: As a Southern California native, I have to say ocean sunset. There is nothing better!
Monica: Same here—ocean sunset all the way.
Eric: Pizza or tacos?
Katie: The answer is always tacos.
Monica: Tacos for sure.
Eric: Beatles or the Stones?
Katie: If I don’t say the Beatles, I may start a family fight! My father and brother are firmly on the hill of “Beatles are the best group to ever exist,” and I have to agree—they were a global phenomenon.
Monica: Same here! I’ve got to go with the Beatles, especially since my family shares the same strong opinion.
Eric: Campfire dinner or white tablecloth fine dining?
Katie: Food is such an important part of every culture and my personal life. Whether it’s a Michelin Star restaurant or something from a food truck on a street corner, it’s all about connecting with the ingredients, the heritage, and the people you're with.
Monica: I couldn’t have said it better. It’s about the experience, whether under the stars by a campfire or at a fine dining restaurant—it’s the company that counts.
Eric: Hike Chilean Patagonia or sail the Med?
Katie: Sailing the Med is on my bucket list!
Monica: Mine too—definitely sailing the Med.
Eric: Dogs or cats, or something else?
Katie: Dogs!
Monica: Dogs all the way.
Eric: I love it—thank you both for sharing your insights, your stories, and for indulging me in a bit of fun with the quick-fire questions—it’s been a pleasure. Katie and Monica, you both embody what makes OW Logistics special: passion, innovation, and a dedication to delivering for our customers. Here’s to you both and the future of OWL!
