Heavy freight.
Light on surprises.

A tools freight forwarder for the category where every dollar per unit counts.

Tools & Equipment

Tools are dense, heavy and sold on thin margins, so cost per unit decides the year. We plan every container to weight, protect the rate and keep the steel and origin paperwork in order.

Hand tools, sockets and fasteners hit the weight limit before they fill the box, so container and US road limits govern every load. Cordless platforms add lithium batteries, and tool storage, ladders and many tools bring steel content that now drives landed cost.

We consolidate mixed assortments from several suppliers at origin into dense, cost-efficient containers. Metal-content and origin records are captured at the PO, and Black Friday and Father’s Day stock is tracked against its promotion date.

Why it’s hard

What makes it hard to move.

  • [01]

    Dense, heavy freight

Loads are governed by container and drayage weight limits, and thin margins make cost per unit the number that matters.

  • [02]

    Steel everywhere

Many tools, storage units and ladders are steel or aluminum, and Section 232 derivative duties now apply to the full value of covered goods.

  • [03]

    Cordless means lithium

Tools ship with battery packs, spare packs ship alone and chargers come too. All of it is dangerous goods, and air is tightly restricted.

  • [04]

    Hard promotion dates

Black Friday deals and Father’s Day bundles have fixed dates. Stock that lands late misses the promotion entirely.

The year at a glance

Two promotions, one tight calendar.

Spring DIY and Father’s Day set the first window, Black Friday the second and bigger one. Trade channels replenish steadily in between.

  1. Jan: Steady
  2. Feb: Book space
  3. Mar: On the water
  4. Apr: In store / peak
  5. May: In store / peak
  6. Jun: In store / peak
  7. Jul: On the water
  8. Aug: On the water
  9. Sep: On the water
  10. Oct: On the water
  11. Nov: In store / peak
  12. Dec: In store / peak
Feb–Mar
Spring DIY and Father’s Day stock sails once factories restart after Lunar New Year.
Jul–Oct
Black Friday goods ship through traditional ocean peak season, when space and surcharges tighten.
All year
Professional and trade channels replenish steadily, so the contract rate matters more than any single window.

At the border

The rules that apply.

For tools, most of the exposure at the US border is about what they’re made of: steel, wood and lithium. Confirm your obligations with your customs broker or counsel; we capture the records at the PO stage.

  • [01] Section 232

    Steel and aluminum

Many steel and aluminum products are listed as Section 232 derivatives, and since April 2026 the duty applies to full value. Low-metal goods can fall out, so keep metal-content records.

  • [02] AD/CVD

    Tool chests and cabinets

Tool chests and cabinets from China (antidumping and countervailing) and Vietnam (antidumping) remain under orders continued after the 2023 sunset review.

  • [03] DG

    Cordless batteries

Tools with lithium-ion packs ship as UN 3481 and spare packs as UN 3480, with UN 38.3 test summaries. Air limits on state of charge tightened in 2026.

  • [04] Lacey Act

    Wooden handles

APHIS names tools as an example under Lacey Act Phase VII, so hammers, axes and garden tools with wood need a plant product declaration.

  • [05] EPA

    Small engines

Gas generators, pressure washers and other small-engine equipment need EPA engine certification and Form 3520-21 at entry.

  • [06] DOE

    Motors and chargers

DOE energy standards cover certain electric motors, air compressors and battery chargers, and importers certify as manufacturers. Check product by product.

FAQ

Tools logistics, answered.

[01]How do I ship cordless power tools with lithium batteries?

Tools shipped with or containing lithium-ion batteries move as Class 9 dangerous goods under UN 3481, and spare packs alone under UN 3480, with UN 38.3 test summaries from the supplier. By air, batteries packed with equipment must fly at a reduced state of charge since 2026, so most cordless tools move by ocean.

[02]Do Section 232 steel tariffs apply to tools?

Many steel and aluminum products are listed as Section 232 derivatives by tariff code. Since April 2026 those duties are assessed on the product’s full value rather than its metal content, while goods with low steel or aluminum content by weight are generally out of scope. Confirm classification and metal content before you place the PO.

[03]Are tool chests from China or Vietnam subject to antidumping duties?

Yes. Tool chests and cabinets from China (antidumping and countervailing) and Vietnam (antidumping) are under orders that were continued after the 2023 sunset review. Check scope with your broker before sourcing tool storage from either country.

[04]Do tools with wooden handles need a Lacey Act declaration?

Generally, yes. Under APHIS Phase VII, which began December 1, 2024, declarations are required for nearly all plant-product tariff codes, and APHIS lists tools as an example. The declaration names the wood’s genus, species and country of harvest.

[05]Do power tools need a CPSC certificate?

Most adult power and hand tools aren’t covered by a specific CPSC rule, so a certificate generally isn’t required. Exceptions include children’s tool sets and accessories like portable gas cans, whose certificate data is now filed electronically in ACE.
